OQ Technology has demonstrated Europe’s first direct-to-mobile (D2M) emergency broadcast message from space. The live demo in Luxembourg showcased how OQ’s LEO satellite network can transmit an emergency broadcast message directly to unmodified smartphones. OQ Technology will demonstrate D2M voice services in the coming year.

CHAPEA Crew Begins Stay Inside NASA’s Mars Habitat for Second Mission

A crew of four research volunteers stepped inside NASA’s CHAPEA (Crew Health and Performance Exploration Analog) habitat on Oct. 19, marking the start of the agency’s second 378-day simulated Mars mission. Ross Elder, Ellen Ellis, Matthew Montgomery, and James Spicer are living and working inside the roughly 1,700-square-foot 3D-printed habitat. The crew will face the challenges of a real Mars mission, and only leave to perform simulated “Marswalk” activities directly outside the habitat.

NASA, NOAA Rank 2025 Ozone Hole as 5th Smallest Since 1992

The 2025 ozone hole is already breaking up, nearly three weeks earlier than usual during the past decade. The hole reached its greatest one-day extent for the year on Sept. 9 at 8.83 million square miles (22.86 million square kilometers) It was about 30% smaller than the largest hole ever observed, which occurred in 2006.

The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope has made another set of critical strides toward launch. This fall, the outer portion passed two tests — a shake test and an intense sound blast. The inner portion of the observatory underwent a major 65-day thermal vacuum test. Roman will address essential questions in the areas of dark energy, planets outside our solar system, and astrophysics.

Shenzhou 22 launched successfully on Tuesday, Nov. 25, at 04:11 UTC from Site 901 at the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in China’s Inner Mongolia province. The China Manned Space Agency (CMSA) launched Shenzhou 22 to provide Tiangong’s current crew with a safe spacecraft to ride home following on-orbit damage to the Shenzhou 20 spacecraft. The Shenzhou 22 mission will be the first launch-on-need flight in Chinese human spaceflight history.
