Canadian government backs 2024 space accelerator in Southern California

Canadian space entrepreneurs are invited to join the 2024 SoCal-Canadian Space Accelerator. The two-month virtual accelerator is backed by the Canadian Trade Commissioner Service. In February and March, Canadian entrepreneurs will be introduced to potential industry, government partners. The accelerator will culminate in April with two in-person pitch events.

ESA to start commercial cargo program

European Space Agency to start competition to develop commercial vehicles. Effort patterned on NASA’s Commercial Orbital Transportation Services (COTS) program. Details about the competition have yet to be worked out. ESA members also backed plans to provide support for Europe’s struggling launch.

LeoLabs data shows on-orbit maneuvers by Russian satellites

Space tracking firm tracked two Russian satellites performing rendezvous and proximity operations. Resurs-P3 and Cosmos-2562 conducted maneuvers that offer a glimpse of potential hazards. The company applied machine learning techniques to detect and characterize the satellites’ maneuvers. The findings come at a time of heightened tensions between Russia and the West over space security.

Astra secures interim financing deal

Astra Space says it has secured interim financing from two investors. Astra Space had defaulted on the terms of the loan agreement last week. New investors agree to waive the default terms on both the loan they purchased. Astra has prioritized its propulsion business, moving personnel to it.
