Risk of Venous Thromboembolism During Spaceflight

Original Publication Date: 2025-03-14 18:39

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) occurs when a thrombus (blood clot) forms in the internal jugular vein (and/or associated vasculature) during spaceflight. The proposed pathogenesis of VTE is referred to as Virchow’s triad and suggests that VTE occurs as the result of: Alterations in blood flow (i.e., stasis), Vascular endothelial injury/changes, and/or, Alterations in the constituents of the blood leading to hypercoagulability.
