Blue Origin and SpaceX start work on cargo versions of crewed lunar landers

NASA has exercised options in Human Landing System (HLS) awards to Blue Origin and SpaceX. The companies are working on versions of their landers that can carry large amounts of cargo. NASA made a passing reference to the work in a Jan. 9 announcement about the Artemis 2 and 3 missions.

SpaceX is scrubbing the launch of Starlink Group 7-11 for today and is now targeting Tuesday, January 23 for a Falcon 9 launch of 22 Starlink satellites to low-Earth orbit. Weather caused Sunday’s delay in SpaceX’s launch of a Falcon 9 rocket from Vandenberg Space Force Base in northwestern Santa Barbara County. Liftoff is targeted for 4:35 p.m. PT. A live webcast of this mission will begin on X @SpaceX about five minutes prior to liftoff.

Philip Hover-Smoot, a long-time aerospace and defense executive, has been named the company’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), as of January 12, 2024. Hover-Smoot succeeds Co-founder and CEO, Eric Ingram, who will now be taking on the roles of Chairman of the Board and Chief Strategy Officer.

Viasat has demonstrated a UK satellite-based augmentation system (UK SBAS) for the first time. The UK is no longer part of the EU’s similar European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service (EGNOS) The trial aims to provide a first step toward a complementary UK SBAS.
