International spaceports seek to collaborate

Eight spaceports in six countries signed a memorandum of understanding Oct. 13. The agreement outlines plans for the launch facilities to work together. The announcement did not disclose specific issues that the group will tackle. The initial group of eight spaceports will meet to determine key topics for collaboration.

Intuitive Machines recently netted a potential $4.8 billion NASA contract to provide communications and navigation services on the Moon. In February, IM’s Odysseus spacecraft became the first privately-developed spacecraft to touch down on the moon. Steve Altemus previously served as Deputy Director of NASA’s Johnson Space Center before launching IM.

ArkEdge Space wins JAXA position, navigation and timing contract

Japanese startup ArkEdge Space won a contract from the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency JAXA. Project is aimed at providing high-precision, global PNT signals. Government agencies around the world are exploring ways to augment and back-up the Global Positioning System. Under another JAXA contract, ArkEdge is developing positioning and communications services for cislunar space.

SpiderOak announces open-source initiative for zero-trust cybersecurity

Cybersecurity firm SpiderOak announced Oct. 17 that it will make its software open source. This allows external developers to contribute to the project and improve security features. SpiderOak’s software is sold to U.S. Government agencies, as well as companies. Open-source projects allow public access to the software’s code.
