China is developing a quantum communications satellite network

Chinese research institutes are working to construct a quantum communications network. Network would use elements of quantum mechanics for encryption and secure transmission of information. Plan builds on breakthroughs made by China’s 2016 Quantum Science Satellite, also known as Mozi. China in recent years included quantum communications and quantum computing in a list of technological megaprojects for breakthroughs by 2030.

Jupiter 3 is a massive geostationary communications satellite built by Maxar Technologies. The satellite is designed to offer 500 gigabit-per-second Ka-band capacity for North and South America. No launch date has yet been announced, but Jupiter 3 is likely to fly in the second quarter.

Atlas Space Operations partners with Viasat Real-Time Earth. Viasat RTE brings another 10 antennas to Atlas’ network immediately and two more by the end of the year. Most antennas in the Viasat network are 7.3 meters. Because that’s larger than Atlas’ traditional antennas, partners will have access to satellites.
