FCC adopts revised NGSO spectrum-sharing rules

The FCC adopted new rules April 20 governing how fixed-satellite service operators share spectrum. Operators awarded licenses in different FCC application processing rounds must avoid interfering with each other. The rules will be phased out 10 years after the first NGSO FSS system receives a license.

U.S. Space Command, Australian Defence Space Command sign MOU. Non-legally binding agreement “deepens military cooperation in the space domain,” commands say. Italian liaison officer assigned to U.S. Space command, based in Colorado Springs. Peruvian National Commission on Aerospace Research and Development, Peruvian Air Force also inked agreement.

Space Force procurement command rebrands commercial space office

Commercial Space Office, or COMSO, will absorb the commercial services office. COMSO will be aligned with the space sensing PEO run by Col. Brian Denaro. Most of the commercial space services the Space Force buys today are for satellite communications. COMSO will establish a working capital fund to fund procurements of commercial space services.

Starship lifts off on first integrated test flight, breaks apart minutes later

SpaceX's first integrated Starship vehicle lifted off on a long-anticipated test flight April 20. Several of the 33 Raptor engines in the Super Heavy booster appeared not to be firing. The vehicle reached an altitude of 39 kilometers before the rocket lost altitude and tumble. SpaceX has several other Starship and Super Heavy vehicles in various stages of development.

NASA starts consortium for ISAM technologies

NASA announces creation of new organization to advance technologies for in-space servicing. COSMIC will coordinate work among companies and organizations regarding technologies. Officials with NASA and the Aerospace Corporation say they want to address gaps in ISAM technologies. The kickoff meeting of COSMIC is scheduled for the fall.
